A favorite across collections, rollnecks sustained their relevance in Fall 2023 and fed into minimalist themes, adding texture to layered looks. Its versatility saw styles in everything from core greys to directional orange hues. Interestingly, brown shades were the most invested in color in fall 2022, at 19%, outpacing black and growing its assortment mix by 7pp YoY.

Utility Shirts

Military-inspired collections from big names, including Prada, put utility themes back on the map for fall. Shirts had cargo pocketing across denim, wool, cotton and garment-dyed fabrics. In the market, arrivals were up 32% from Fall 2021 to 2022, with 52% of styles in the overshirt category. With its broad demographic appeal, adopt the styling as a commercial update to assortments.

Boxy Blazers

Comfort themes have ousted skinnier shapes in favor of baggier garments. Retailers are taking note as loose and relaxed fits grew 72% and 74% YoY, respectively, versus skinny at just 28%. With the direction switching to roomier fits, adoption is necessary but doesn’t have to be extreme. Look to update core styles in relaxed fits and sprinkle a few wide-leg shapes into assortments for the more trend-hungry customer.

Dress Shoes

A definite switch to a smarter way of dressing on the runway saw lace-up dress shoes outshine sneakers in fall, with many designers opting for classic iterations, while others updated models with chunkier rubber soles. Arrivals of smart shoes have already begun to pick up in Fall 2022, seeing total options up 46% YoY, with August and October peak drop times ahead of party season.
