Neon and on and on…

Looking ahead to Springtime with one foot still in Fall, the high voltage hues displayed in the Resort 2012 shows inject some energy into a period where we can sometimes feel lost as our wardrobes straddle seasons. The message is loud and clear. It’s still all about neon.

Some designers stuck to neon as an accent, including Marc by Marc Jacobs who toyed with a toxic lemon for neck bows and belts and Balenciaga who used a perky pink to pack some punch behind prints and highlight bags. This timid take on the trend might not seem like a bad idea especially considering Topshop’s Fluro piped pumps are selling extremely well, but we must not forget the sluggish sales of the SS11 Miu Miu collection. On the other end of the spectrum Henry Holland threw caution to the wind with a rainbow of super brights paying homage to the 90’s. Although the voltage of neon is varied, it’s always live!

Other stand out shows which incorporated the trend were Micheal Kors and Diane von Furstenberg who focused on sporty and scuba style looks. In particular, DVF seems to have hit a home run with her ‘Wrapsody Rap’ collection nailing neon and also mixing up her prints. Bravo Diane! McQ and Herve Leger both featured neons in bold colour blocks. Both designers are still placing their chips on body-con shapes, and as samey it may seem, it’s looks like a safe bet as our sentiment tracker confirms a rise in opinion towards ‘body con’ shapes over the past 8 months, coinciding with a recent record peak in buzz.

So what is everyone saying about the trend online? Our tracking shows sentiment towards neon took a small dive since we last covered it but appears to be climbing once again as hits show substantial jump in coverage over the past few weeks with this set to continue. As a general rule of thumb, Resort shows hold hints as to what to expect in September’s SS12 shows, and if so, the future looks very bright indeed.
