Printed short-sleeve shirts

Consumer interest in retro 70s prints is still riding high, with 64% of geometric printed products seen on new shirt arrivals as the nostalgic story continues to build momentum. Boxier fits were favored by the trend-led customer, reflected in the shirts worn by fashion week attendees. Streetwear brand Stüssy backed the trend for its Summer '21 range, debuting a summer-inspired boxy vacation shirt featuring an all-over orange poppy print.
On the runway
The printed shirt stood firmly within the overarching vacation-ready themes of the season, as regular travel is set to resume for 2022. At Paul Smith, bold sunflowers were arranged against a mix of pastel hues while MSGM went for vibrant printed graphics, offered as part of a co-ord set. Retailers looking to pursue this trend should also note revere collars and relaxed fits, applicable details that have gone from strength to strength on and off the runway.

Bermuda shorts
In retail
The mass market is already awash with this silhouette, sitting as the third most-stocked shape in stock currently, and ranking above chinos and cargos. While the Bermuda short was predominately seen in smart and tailored looks by attendees outside the shows, looser fitting styles with drawstring waists have a wider appeal. The shape has seen recent success at retailers like Pull&Bear and Bershka.
On the runway
The shape's affinity to surf and sports themes make it a vacation essential for next summer, emerging as the most dominant short shape on the Spring 2022 runways. From MSGM's board-short design offering to Phillip Plein's basketball knee-length style, loose and relaxed fits are a must for retailers looking to invest.

Neutrals
In retail
Alongside the growth of loungewear, neutral tones aligned with cozy shapes, pushing retailers to double their assortment of hoodies in soft tones, while blacks fell out of favor. This preference was also seen on the sidewalks, with an attendee at Milan Fashion Week opting for a loose-fit trouser and top matching set. The color was also noted within preppy themes, showing a significant increase in polo shirt arrivals - an essential top shape at Spring 2022 runway shows.
On the runway
Neutral tones presented themselves as a core color palette for next season lines, slotting into the new uniform themes as workwear styles become increasingly more relaxed. At Fendi, desert neutrals were spotted across a range of smart loungewear and tailored sets. Similarly, Tod's offered a range of loose tailoring sets in varying neutral hues, from stone to camel, which also saw utility influences, such as four breast pockets on matching shirts and jackets.

Utility
In retail
The influence of functionality within retail has continued to grow thanks to hiking and outdoor themes that exploded during 2020. Over 30% of Zara UK's Spring 2021 co-ord mix featured utility-style outerwear, with double breast pockets and rough, canvas-like fabrics a clear nod to the trend. EDITED identified utility shirts as a spotlighted product within email communications back in February, seeing a 58% increase in arrivals YoY for 2021. Attendees also strongly backed the trend, from cargo pants and shorts to utilitarian jackets and shirts.
On the runway
Gorpcore was solidified as a major theme for yet another season as the great outdoors continued to provide an abundance of influence for designers. The runway saw a host of utility jackets, cargo trousers and gilets - noted at designers like Woolrich and Undercover. Even minimal shapes were given the practical update with pockets and technical zip details.

Bucket hats
In retail
Propelled into the mainstream as a result of the rising interest in nostalgia and board culture, retailers heavily promoted the bucket hat for Spring 2021, pushing as part of vacation and festival edits. With upped celebrity/influencer backing, and designs suitable for fall assortments, the bucket hat has cemented itself as a year-round accessory. At H&M, checks and animal prints performed well, while black and neutral shades were a top mover across retailers.
On the runway
Safari hats were an update to this classic style on the Spring 2022 runway, drawing on adventure themes, as spotted at PHIPPS. Tie-up bucket hats were also noted at NUMERO 00 and Mr.Saturday and were favored by street-style influencers in Milan and Paris. Wider brims presented a commercial update to the classic style that for spring next year.
