The polka pox

As a print perennial, the polka is always on the radar, but until now, hasn’t experienced such a strong sartorial moment since a certain yellow bikini hit the radio waves in 1960. The print that says ‘I’m a bag of fun!’ or ‘Don’t challenge me, I’m breezy!’ has stepped into the spotlight and is commanding attention on a global scale.…

Golden gods and goddesses

Many years ago, actresses and actors of the silver screen were seen as glamorous gods, equally revered and admired by their adoring fans. This was a time long before knicker-less party antics and internet sex tapes were spread virally online, a time when the press depicted the stars as wholesome and inaccessible, imbuing them with mystique.…

Get a shift on

With the influx of ladylike looks and grown-up-gal garms we’ve seen lately, we thought it was time to let our hair down and lift our hemlines up. The Autumn/Winter 11/12 shows picked up where Prada left off last fall, and offered a parade of polished, ladylike silhouettes and grown-up details. Miu Miu took to the fore, with their 40s tea dresses, nipped in waists and sharp-shouldered suiting, the models, complete with roller-set hair-dos and post-war steely glares looked every bit the glammed up mam.…

Brogue trader

You can’t fail to have noticed the brogue intrusion of recent seasons, flooding the high street with mannish kicks. Flat-soled, with leather-uppers and punched detailing, the traditional shape has had something of a rebirth and is now a style staple. Fast forward a couple of seasons, and the evolution has taken a warped path.…
